Maldives is a popular destination for surfers. Some island resorts on the atoll edge have good waves for surfing. From amongst the tourism atolls, most known surfs are in North and South Male' Atolls. The resorts on the eastern reef of the atoll are ideally placed for the avid surfer.
The southwest monsoon bringing with it massive swells, especially from June to September. The sizes range from 3 – 8 feet. There are several well-known surf breaks in North and South Male’ Atoll. Resorts near these breaks are perfect for surfing aficionados, as you can get the full Maldivian experience while riding the waves to your hearts content. The
lesser-known, but amazing surf breaks further away from Male’ atoll can be accessed by specialised surf cruises (often referred to as surfaries) offered by cruise operators in the country.
The best waves can be experienced from March to October, with the biggest swells likely to occur in June/July/August. The surf throughout the Maldives generally ranges in size from 4-8 feet, however bigger days have been experienced. A great variety of reef breaks exist ranging in intensity from quite mellow and enjoyable shreddable walls to gnarlier hollow sucking dry pits. There is something for everyone when you surf the Maldives, and although crowded it is possible to get away from it all and enjoy some of the warmest most pristine water you will ever experience. It is a tropical island paradise and you will have no complaints taking your non surfing partner for a couple of weeks here.

North Male Atoll- Cokes, Lohis, Jailbreaks, Ninjas, Lohis, Chickens and Honky's South Male Atoll- Quarters, Natives, Kate's, Last Stops, Twin Peaks, Gurus and Riptides. Maldives Outer Atolls- Outer Atoll has reef breaks offering challenging conditions to surfers. 300 miles from the South Male Atoll, the outer atoll is reachable through charter vessel.
